Writer • Adding text to a blank page

I spent a lot of time using open office and have almost 150 pages written. Because of the pictures many of the pages had large areas of blank space after the text and after the pictures. I decided to add more text and did so and when I went to the next page I found out that now that large blank area was on the next page. I tried deleting the blank area by moving the text back up to the top of the page and when I went back to the previous page all the text I had written was gone and the blank area was now there. What I want to do is write text into that blank area without the next page being affected. Maybe I'm missing something, what can I do?
