Thx Rory.

In This PC, F: actually shows as D: (F:). If I Rt click and look at Properties, the General tab shows D: Type: Local Disk. Down lower on the same tab is an area containing a circle showing used and free space with Drive F: immediately underneath and a [Disk Clean-up] in the same area. I'm using W10.

Bewilderingly, the problem has gone away this morning. I left the PC running overnight, opened one of the files this morning, edited (changed the text in a comment was all I did), then clicked the Save icon then closed and no error message was received.

Then I opened the other file and did the same and no error message appeared.

Both files are saved as .xls which is how our accountant wants them.

Please don't explain all the above unless you want.
